List

The forgiving three

Pothos: tolerates almost any light, prefers to dry out between waterings, vines beautifully. Hard to kill on purpose.

Snake plant: thrives on neglect. Survives low light, infrequent watering, and dry air. Looks architectural.

ZZ plant: glossy leaves, minimal care, handles offices and dim corners. Slow-growing but consistent.

What kills these is overwatering

All three rot if their soil stays wet. Stick a finger an inch into the soil — if it's dry, water. If it's damp, wait.

Most beginner plant deaths are kindness, not neglect. These plants want to be ignored a little.

Plants to skip until you're confident

Fiddle leaf fig: dramatic about light, water, and being moved. Beautiful but fussy.

Calathea: needs humidity and filtered water. Will brown for reasons you can't always identify.

Orchids: easier than people think, but unforgiving with watering. Start once you've kept the easy three alive 6 months.

Frequently asked

People also ask

Are pothos toxic to pets?+

Yes — mildly. Causes drooling and oral irritation if chewed. Hang or place out of reach if you have curious pets.

How often should I fertilize?+

Once a month, spring and summer only. None in winter. Half-strength on the package — most fertilizers are too concentrated.

Do these need sunlight?+

All three tolerate low light, but grow much faster with bright indirect light. Direct sun scorches them.
