Watering on a calendar is how most houseplants die. Checking the plant takes ten seconds and is right every time - here is exactly what to check and what each signal means.

Push your finger into the soil up to the second knuckle - about 5 centimeters down. Dry at that depth means water now; any coolness or moisture means wait. The surface lies constantly: it dries within hours of watering while the root zone below stays soaked, which is why eyeballing the topsoil leads straight to overwatering.
For most common houseplants - pothos, philodendron, monstera, peace lily - this dry-then-soak rhythm is exactly what their roots want. The exceptions run in both directions: succulents and snake plants want the pot fully dry before the next drink, while ferns and calatheas prefer the soil to stay lightly damp, never soggy and never bone dry.
Lift the pot right after a thorough watering and register the weight. Lift it again every couple of days. The difference between saturated and dry is dramatic - water is heavy, and a dried-out pot feels almost hollow. Within a few weeks you can diagnose each plant in two seconds without touching the soil.
This is the method for hanging planters and big floor pots where finger-testing is awkward - for the big ones, tilt the pot an inch with one hand rather than lifting it. A wooden chopstick works as a backup dipstick: push it deep, pull it out, and read it like a cake tester. Damp soil clings and darkens the wood; dry soil leaves it clean.
Drooping with dry soil is thirst, and the plant usually perks up within hours of a proper soak. Drooping with wet soil is the opposite problem - roots drowning or rotting - and more water makes it worse. The leaf signal alone is ambiguous; the leaf signal plus the finger test is a diagnosis.
Other reads: wrinkled or puckered succulent leaves mean thirst; yellowing lower leaves on a chronically wet plant point to overwatering; crispy brown leaf tips usually mean the gaps between waterings are too long, or dry indoor air. Curled-under leaves on a calathea or prayer plant are an early thirst flag worth catching before the droop.
Water slowly until it runs out the drainage holes, then empty the saucer after fifteen minutes - roots sitting in runoff is overwatering by another route. This full-soak approach wets the entire root ball, where the daily-splash habit leaves the bottom half permanently dry and trains roots to stay shallow.
If water races straight through and out almost instantly, the soil has dried to the point of repelling water (peat mixes are notorious for this). Fix it bottom-up: stand the pot in a basin with a few centimeters of water for 20 to 30 minutes and let it wick upward until the surface darkens.
The same plant in the same pot needs water twice as often in a bright warm July as it does in a dim cool January - light, temperature, humidity, pot size, and pot material all move the timeline. A fixed 'every Sunday' schedule is wrong for half the year by definition. Terracotta pots breathe and dry days faster than plastic or glazed ones; small pots dry faster than large.
The sustainable system is a check day, not a watering day: walk your plants once or twice a week, finger-test or lift each, and water only the ones that ask. Ten plants take three minutes. Most people who switch from schedule to check-day stop losing plants almost immediately - overwatering, not neglect, is the leading cause of houseplant death.
Underwater, clearly. Most plants recover from a missed week with a good soak, but rotted roots from chronic overwatering are often fatal. When unsure, wait two more days - the dry side is the safe side.
The cheap probe meters are decent for deep pots where fingers can't reach, but they drift and fail quietly. Trust them as a second opinion, calibrate against the finger test occasionally, and never water on the meter's word alone.
Room temperature is best. Cold tap water straight onto warm roots can shock tropical plants, and very hot water damages them. Filling the can and letting it sit overnight also lets chlorine dissipate, which sensitive plants like calatheas appreciate.
Usually inconsistent watering - long dry spells between soaks - or dry indoor air, especially in winter heating season. Some species also react to tap-water minerals; switching to filtered or rested water often clears it up over a few months.
