Movement options
Indoor obstacle course: pillows on the floor (jump from one to the next), under the dining table (crawl through), couch cushions (climb over).
Dance party: a 20-minute kids' playlist on a phone speaker. Movement keeps energy from going destructive.
Sensory and pretend
Sensory bin: rice or dried beans in a baking dish with measuring cups. 30 minutes of focused play, no screen needed.
Pretend kitchen: small pots, plastic cups, a wooden spoon. They will 'cook' for an hour.
Rotation strategy
Toddler attention spans on any one activity: 15–30 minutes. Plan 4 activities for a 2-hour stretch.
Rotate before they get bored, not after. Boredom turns into whining; ending on a high note keeps them ready for the next thing.
People also ask
Is screen time OK on rainy days?+
30 minutes of decent kids' content is fine. Don't beat yourself up; one rainy day isn't going to define them.
What if it's a sick day?+
Reduce expectations. Cuddles, books, slow movies. Sick days aren't enrichment days.
Activities for very young toddlers (under 2)?+
Pots and pans on the floor with wooden spoons. Stacking cups. Putting socks in a basket. Simple is enough.
