Method

What to split equally

Rent (if rooms are similar size), shared utilities (water, internet, electric for shared spaces), shared subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify family).

If rooms are very different in size, prorate rent by square footage. Spotrent.com has a free calculator that handles this fairly.

What to split by usage

Groceries: don't share unless you cook together regularly. Mixing groceries is the #1 source of roommate friction.

Streaming services beyond shared: each person pays for their own.

Use the right app

Splitwise is the standard. Free. Tracks who paid what, who owes whom. Settles up at intervals — weekly is ideal.

Don't try to track it in your head. Six weeks of accumulated 'I'll get the next one' becomes resentment.

Frequently asked

People also ask

Should we have a joint account?+

Only for shared bills, and only if you really trust the person. Most setups work better with Splitwise + monthly settlement.

How do I bring up money issues?+

Schedule a 'house meeting' once a month. Talking about money outside emotional moments is much easier than in them.

What if my roommate is late paying?+

Address it on day one of being late. Patterns set early. Don't let 2 months pass before saying something.
