The four-category formula
Protein: turkey, cheese, hard-boiled egg, hummus, peanut butter. Carb: bread, crackers, pasta, tortilla, rice cake.
Fruit: apple slices, berries, grapes, banana. Veg: carrot sticks, cucumber, snap peas, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper strips.
Sunday prep, weekday assembly
Sunday: wash and chop fruit/veg into single-serving containers. Hard-boil 4 eggs. Make a list of 5 protein/carb combos.
Weekday: pull from prepped containers. 5 minutes per lunch, every morning. The hard work happened on Sunday.
Get the kid involved
Lunch packed by the kid (with supervision) gets eaten more often. They feel ownership.
Age 6+: they can build their own from your prepped containers. Show them the formula once and they get it.
People also ask
What about food allergies at school?+
Check the school's allergy policy. Many ban peanut butter; some ban tree nuts. SunButter is a good substitute.
Cold lunches OK every day?+
Mostly. Once a week pack a thermos with leftover pasta or soup for variety.
How do I keep lunches fresh?+
Ice pack always. Insulated lunch bag. Don't pre-pack the night before unless it's all cold-stable foods.
